Frequently-Asked (and some Technical) Questions

  • When I use BackUpSecure™ to store my data off-site, how safe is it from being read by unauthorised people?
Your files are stored in an area private to you on the BackUpSecure remote storage facilities. They are encrypted with the latest Advanced Encryption Standard (Rijndael), now adopted by the US Government as the standard for the future, to succeed DES and Triple-DES. We use the most secure variant of the specification, with a 256-bit key.

  • How do I access my backup data when I need to?
If you decide you need to access a backup file after you consult the backup log file, we will email you the backups you need on request and after some security procedures. (At ADS, we cannot ourselves see what is in the files - because they could only be accessed with knowledge of the private passwords and/or encryption schemes you will have set.) Alternatively, we will send you your files by bulk download for a small handling charge if you need a lot of data.

  • Where can I learn more about the AES Advanced Encryption System used by BackUpSecure to protect my data?
The Computer Security Division of the US government National Institute of Science and Technology web site concerned is at http://csrc.nist.gov/CryptoToolkit/tkencryption.html . There is a fact sheet at http://csrc.nist.gov/CryptoToolkit/aes/aesfact.html

  • Can my data be compressed, so that it takes less time to transmit my files (and less space to store them)?
Yes, we include compression to the popular WinZip standard.
  • Can our computers be used for normal working, while BackUpSecure is running?
Yes: the program is small and uses sophisticated multi-threaded routines, and works unobtrusively in the background. It does not "take over" the machine. You can even be using the Internet and email at the same time.

  • When does BackUpSecure™ send my backups to the remote service?
BackUpSecure™ monitors the files you want to have secured, and queues them for transmission. At the next opportunity, whenever you are connected to the Internet, the waiting files are transmitted. If you shut down your PC while backups are still queued for transmission, you will be alerted and given the opportunity to postpone the shutdown. Alternatively, you can "end" the BackUpSecure™ transmission and confirm the shutdown. Your queued backup files will remain in the BackUpSecure™ outbox, and will again be transmitted when your PC is next online.
